Before becoming Metropolitan he was Archbishop of Philadelphia and Eastern Pennsylvania and Abbot of St. Tikhon's Monastery, which also has a seminary attached to it. This particular picture was taken at the Albanian Archdiocesan Assembly last October (2003), which was hosted by St. Nicholas. At this assembly, Bishop Nikon was nominated by the delegates to be Bishop of Boston and the Albanian Archdiocese. The Synod of Bishops then canonically elected him at a meeting soon after.
